About

The Toronto Birth Centre is one of Canada's most distinctive and culturally significant maternity facilities — an Indigenous-led birthing space where pregnant people in the care of midwives can labour, give birth, and receive postpartum support in a setting grounded in First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures. Located at 525 Dundas Street East in Toronto's Corktown neighbourhood, the TBC offers an intimate, home-like environment as an alternative to hospital birth, with the safety and skilled care of registered midwives at every step. At the heart of the TBC's mission is cultural safety. The centre was founded on the belief that Indigenous communities and communities whose own birthing knowledge has been suppressed by colonial systems deserve to reclaim birth as a cultural experience. The space honours Indigenous ways of knowing and being, and a priority placement policy ensures access for Indigenous families who continue to face systemic inequities in healthcare. Multilingual resources are available in over 15 languages, including Amharic, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Spanish, and Vietnamese, reflecting the diversity of families the TBC welcomes. Families access the TBC through a registered midwifery group that provides care at the centre. The TBC website includes a directory to help expectant parents find a midwifery practice that attends births there. Regular building tours are offered for families considering birth at the centre. Whether you are an Indigenous family seeking culturally grounded care, or simply looking for a warm, midwife-supported birth experience in Toronto, the Toronto Birth Centre offers something genuinely rare in Canadian maternity care.
